  4. 1799. Various excavations continued
  5. throughout the 19th century and gradually
  6. assumed a more scientific character, largely
  7. as a result of the work of the British
  8. archaeologist Flinders Petrie from 1880
  9. onwards and the formation of the Egyptian
  10. Exploration Fund 1892. In 1922 another
  11. British archaeologist, Howard Carter,
  12. discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen, the only
  13. royal tomb with all its treasures intact.
